Ted Turner was a media pioneer, entertainer, and ecologist known for a large public presence and legendary stories. He was born Robert Edward Turner III in 1938 in Cincinnati, grew up in Savannah, and attended schools in Georgia and Tennessee. He studied classics and economics at Brown University but did not graduate after being expelled for having a girl in the dorms, later receiving an honorary degree. After Coast Guard Reserve service, he took over his father’s business and became president and CEO of Turner Advertising Company. He sold radio stations, bought an Atlanta UHF station, and programmed classic movies and popular TV, helping create the superstation model that expanded into major cable networks.
