2026 Poynter Journalism Prizes now open for entries until Feb. 13 - Poynter
"The first new award, which carries the contest's largest cash prize ever at $10,000, is the Poynter Journalism Prize for Excellence in Climate Change Reporting. The prize will honor rigorous and illuminating reporting on the important subject of climate change, and is sponsored by the Hennecke Family Foundation. The winning journalist or team will participate in a future educational event with Poynter."
"The second new category for 2026 is the Poynter Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on Poverty, which is being sponsored anonymously. The prize honors exemplary coverage of crucial issues related to poverty in the United States and addresses root causes and solutions to complex issues. Like the existing prizes in the contest, it carries a $2,500 cash award for the winner."
The 2026 Poynter Journalism Prizes opened for entries on Jan. 5 and accept submissions from U.S.-based news organizations across digital, television, audio and print platforms. The contest added two specialty categories: Excellence in Climate Change Reporting with a $10,000 prize sponsored by the Hennecke Family Foundation, and Distinguished Reporting on Poverty with a $2,500 prize sponsored anonymously. Entry deadline is 6 p.m. Eastern on Feb. 13. The early-bird entry fee is $75 through Jan. 31, increasing to $85 afterward. Winners may participate in educational events with Poynter and prizes honor rigorous, solution-focused coverage of climate and poverty issues.
