Why Google seems to be losing its iron grip on search - and what I use now instead
Briefly

Google, once a colossal force in search, has seen its global market share decline below 90% for the first time since 2015. Originally propelled by the innovation of PageRank and its 2000 introduction of AdWords, Google captured 60% of the market within a year of launching. However, according to Statcounter, its share averaged 89.7% from October to December 2024, dropping further to 86.73% in April 2025. Despite the decline, the accuracy of some data tracking sources remains questionable.
In the late 1990s, Google rose rapidly from a new search algorithm to dominate the market, but its share has significantly declined, now below 90%.
Statcounter data indicates that Google's global search market share dropped to around 89.7% at the end of 2024 and has remained below 90% well into 2025.
