Nextdoor CEO on why he won't cut licensing deals with AI companies
Briefly

Nextdoor's CEO Nirav Tolia discussed the implications of data scraping by AI firms during the Cannes Lions ad festival. He believes that allowing companies like ChatGPT to scrape Nextdoor's content could prevent users from visiting the platform directly. Tolia's ideological stance is rooted in his past experiences with Shopping.com, where reliance on Google led to devastating traffic loss due to algorithm changes. As a result, Nextdoor has chosen to block data scraping entirely, ensuring control over its content distribution strategy.
Tolia emphasized a proactive approach to content protection, stating, 'If you spread your content far and wide, there's a very good chance that one of these better funded, larger companies will take all that content.'
Reflecting on past experiences, he noted, 'When I was starting Nextdoor, we said it's much more difficult to grow without the benefit of Google, but we want to do everything not to be reliant because we can't sleep well at night.'
