A recent Wall Street Journal report reveals that Meta allowed numerous fraudulent ads to proliferate on Facebook and Instagram, significantly affecting users and legitimate businesses. Approximately half of all scam complaints involving Zelle transactions, as reported by JPMorgan Chase, were linked to Meta during 2023-2024. The problem has worsened due to the rise of cryptocurrency scams and complex criminal activities. Victims, such as legitimate business owner Edgar Guzman, have reported significant reputational damage due to unauthorized ads using their names. The growing trend of such fraudulent practices poses serious concerns over user safety on Meta's platforms.
"What sucks is we have to break it to people that they've been scammed - we don't even do online sales," Guzman told the Journal, adding that the fraudulent ads have damaged his company's reputation through negative reviews.
This report highlights how the issue of fraud on Meta's platforms has escalated significantly, driven by cryptocurrency schemes, AI-generated content, and sophisticated criminal networks.
