Google Maps is set for a huge overhaul. What will its two billion users think?
"Ask Maps, an advanced tool that expands upon conversational abilities introduced last November. This feature will offer personalised suggestions, such as identifying nearby device charging stations, cafes with shorter queues, or generating comprehensive multi-stop road trip itineraries."
"Gemini's recommendations will draw upon a vast database of over 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors, amassed since Google Maps' inception over two decades ago."
"Immersive Navigation that will present a three-dimensional perspective designed to give users a better grasp of where they are at any moment in time. The 3D renderings created by Gemini will include landmarks such as notable buildings, medians in the roads and other aspects of the terrain."
Google Maps is implementing a significant overhaul powered by Gemini AI to enhance its service for two billion users. The redesign introduces two major features: Ask Maps, which provides personalized recommendations like nearby charging stations, less-crowded cafes, and multi-stop road trip itineraries; and Immersive Navigation, a 3D perspective tool showing landmarks and terrain details to help drivers understand their surroundings better. Ask Maps leverages a database of over 300 million places and 500 million user reviews accumulated over two decades. Initially launching on mobile apps for iPhone and Android in the US and India, these features will expand to computers and additional countries. Google has not disclosed plans regarding advertising opportunities within Ask Maps recommendations.
