"While we respect the ASA's decision, we fundamentally disagree with the characterisation of a campaign that critically reflects widely reported economic conditions as socially irresponsible,"
"The advert was intended to provoke discussion about the state of the financial system and the need to consider better futures, not to offer simplistic solutions or minimise risk."
"trivialised the risks of cryptocurrency"
The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned a series of Coinbase adverts that depicted the country in states of disrepair alongside a satirical slogan. The adverts showed scenes such as a family home in disrepair, a high street with closed shops littered with binbags and rats, and a supermarket with signs highlighting price increases, while characters sang a satirical song about everything being "just fine." Thirty-five members of the public complained that the ads were irresponsible and trivialised the risks of crypto investments. The ASA upheld the complaints and banned the adverts. Coinbase said it disagreed and argued the campaign aimed to provoke discussion about the financial system, not to minimise risk. Cryptocurrency remains largely unregulated in the UK.
