What do people of Salford think about British flags and Gary Neville?
"I love my country, I love Manchester, I love England,"
"But I've been building in this city for 15-20 years and nobody has put a Union Jack flag up, so why do you need to put one up now?"
"Quite clearly, it's sending a message to everybody that there's something you don't like."
"I just kept thinking as I was driving home that we're all being turned on each other. And the division that's being created is absolutely disgusting. Mainly created by angry, middle-aged white men, who know exactly what they're doing."
Neville posted a video criticising what he described as the negative use of the British flag after noticing Union Jack and St George's cross flags on lampposts in Salford. He said he had seen 50 to 60 flags while driving along Littleton Road to the stadium and ordered one removed from a building site he has invested in, believing the displays aim to sow division amid major political debate about immigration. He said he loves the country but questioned why flags are being raised now after 15–20 years of building in the city, and said the division is mainly created by angry, middle-aged white men. Opposition figures criticised the remarks and protesters later unfurled a banner calling him 'traitor scum' outside his Hotel Football business.
