Angel Di Maria said his Manchester United experience deteriorated after issues with Louis van Gaal. Van Gaal used him in multiple wide roles and also as a number 10 and midfielder, believing Di Maria was not fulfilling assigned responsibilities. Di Maria said arguments behind the scenes intensified, including during a period marked by an attempted burglary at his Cheshire home. Van Gaal responded by saying he never asked to sign Di Maria and that the club made the decision. He also said he tried many positions but could not find one where Di Maria was effective within his structured system.
