Red card, three subs & Palmer injured - how Chelsea unravelled
""It was rough... the red card [would be] difficult not only for Chelsea, it [would be] difficult for any club,""
""After the red card, all the planning and everything doesn't exist any more.""
""It's the best solution, because we are still 95 minutes to play,""
""I think even Robert is aware of that, but also it's difficult because he has to take a decision in one second or two seconds.""
Robert Sanchez was sent off after bringing down Bryan Mbeumo just over four minutes into the match, forcing Chelsea into an immediate tactical reshuffle with two substitutions to introduce a replacement goalkeeper and a defender. Bruno Fernandes put Manchester United ahead after 14 minutes, Casemiro doubled the lead before also being dismissed, and Cole Palmer left with a recurring groin injury in the 21st minute. The first half became the first in Premier League history to feature two or more goals, two red cards and three substitutions. Trevoh Chalobah scored after halftime, but Chelsea could not overturn the 2-1 deficit despite late pressure, while Enzo Maresca lamented the loss of his goalkeeper and the collapse of pre-match planning.
