Joel Veltman's pass set up Welbeck's decisive strike after Gruda laid the ball off. Brighton withstood heavy United pressure before the break as Lisandro Martinez, Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha came close. Benjamin Sesko headed a late consolation, but Shea Lacey was sent off with two quick yellow cards and Brighton progressed. Welbeck has now scored eight times against Manchester United in his career.
