Michael Carrick is in pole position to be named Manchester United interim manager until the end of the season. Talks between Carrick and the club hierarchy have reportedly progressed well, with United keen to make an appointment before players return to training. Carrick is reported to want Jonathan Woodgate on his coaching staff, and former players including Wayne Rooney have expressed interest in helping. Carrick previously served a short unbeaten caretaker spell at Old Trafford and managed Middlesbrough, guiding them to Championship play-offs before being dismissed after a 10th-place finish.
