Kobbie Mainoo was an unused substitute at the start of the Premier League season while Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes started centrally ahead of Ruben Amorim's back three. Manchester United lost 1-0 to Arsenal from a set piece, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha making their Old Trafford debuts. Casemiro was substituted with 25 minutes remaining and Manuel Ugarte replaced him, leaving Mainoo on the bench.
