How football star's transfer sparked Korean saying
"Most people there don't know the etymology of it, so I find myself explaining it."
"It wasn't nice to be reminded of that, I suppose, when I first heard the phrase."
"It was in my first year out there. I'd never heard it before I went."
"The first person I was working with was from Barnsley and he was really into his football, so he was the one who explained it to me."
Alan Smith moved from Leeds United to Manchester United in summer 2004 for £7m. Smith's performances at Old Trafford over three years did not match his earlier peak at Leeds, where he had been a homegrown hero. In South Korea an online phrase, "Leeds days", emerged in the 2000s to describe someone's prime or the peak of their life, inspired by observers noting Smith's drop in form after the transfer. The expression spread widely across South Korea, even though many speakers do not know the origin or the city. Josh Wileman encountered and explained the phrase while living and teaching in South Korea.
