Casemiro joined Manchester United in 2022 and has repeatedly seen his place jeopardized by poor performances and fitness concerns. A woeful display in a 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace in May 2024 prompted calls for him to leave and retire from top-level football. He was named on the bench for the FA Cup final but withdrew before kickoff, citing that he was not 100% fit, and left celebrations early to go on holiday. He remained at the club through the 2024 summer transfer window. Early in the 2024–25 season he was substituted at halftime against Liverpool and replaced by youngster Toby Collyer. He started only two more league games before Erik ten Hag was sacked. New manager Ruben Amorim questioned whether Casemiro could cope with Premier League demands during a long spell out of the team in December and January.
