Gary Neville names the two managers he wants to beat Michael Carrick to permanent Manchester United job
"I think he's a really good person and a fantastic football player. He's understated, he's composed, and he won't get too high or too low."
"A few weeks ago, before the first game, I think everyone in football thought that if Michael Carrick could hold the baton for the rest of the season, do a really good job, put some smiles back on the players, and put the happiness back into the fans and the team, and then hand that baton over, that's what everyone was thinking three or four weeks ago."
Michael Carrick took over as Manchester United caretaker manager earlier this month and will remain in charge for the 2025/26 season following Ruben Amorim's sacking. Carrick's first match produced a home victory over Manchester City—the club's first home win over their local rivals in three years—followed by a 3-2 win over Arsenal that moved United into Champions League positions. Gary Neville praised Carrick's composure, character and playing ability and said Carrick has put smiles back on players and fans. Neville suggested Carrick could steady the club short-term but favored appointing a more experienced permanent manager at season's end.
