Manchester United were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town after a woeful first-half performance. Grimsby took a deserved half-time lead through Charles Vernam and United youth product Tyrell Warren. United recovered to level the match at 2-2 when Harry Maguire followed up Bryan Mbeumo's strike, forcing a penalty shootout. Grimsby won the shootout 12-11 after Bryan Mbeumo missed the decisive spot-kick. Fans jeered and chanted at the United manager; the result left the manager seeking explanations and prompted suggestions that changes are needed within the squad.
Not good enough clearly, what we did especially in the first half. I think we gave the game to them, clearly, straight away, exactly what they wanted. Win duels, second balls, set plays. We fought back but I think that was the minimum that we could show to the fans that travelled today, for ourselves, for the club, but clearly not good enough.
A bouncing Blundell Park witnessed the nadir of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era on Wednesday evening as the League Two side outfought and out thought the Premier League side in the first half. Charles Vernam and United youth product Tyrell Warren gave Grimsby a deserved half-time lead, with the visitors fortunate to take the game to penalties as Harry Maguire followed up Bryan Mbeumo's strike to make it 2-2.
