Manchester United were beaten by fourth-tier Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup, drawing 2-2 before losing 12-11 on penalties. Ruben Amorim started new forwards Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, with Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes introduced at half-time, but both Cunha and Mbeumo missed spot-kicks. United had only twice previously exited in the second round since 1981-82. The result increased pressure on Amorim, who said he was shocked by the performance, warned that something must change but refused to replace the entire squad, and admitted he did not watch the shoot-out.
