Yanks use Scherzer's tipping to help Rice hit HR
""They're good at it," Toronto manager John Schneider said. "Max has got to be a little bit better. It was obvious in the changeups, Rice just missed one, foul homer, and it's fair game.""
""I thought I had addressed it. I thought I had made the proper adjustment to get my glove in front of my face but clearly I hadn't," Scherzer said."
Aaron Judge signaled Max Scherzer's changeups from second base, allowing Ben Rice to identify the pitch and ultimately hit a three-run homer on the 10th pitch of the at-bat. Judge, playing his second game in right field since a throwing-arm injury, later made a diving catch on George Springer's 106.4 mph sinking liner to strand a runner. Scherzer threw 17 changeups over 4 1/3 innings and acknowledged hitters could tell the pitch from first base despite an attempted glove adjustment. Ty France visited the mound after the tipping; Rice fouled off multiple pitches before driving a 380-foot fastball. The Yankees won 4-3, their 11th victory in 14 games, closing within two games of the AL East lead.
