The long-standing debate surrounding promotion and relegation (pro-rel) in U.S. soccer may soon see progress as the United Soccer League (USL) announces plans for implementation around 2027 or 2028. With this system, teams performance will directly influence their league standings, making matches across all tiers significant. This shift could enhance player quality and community impact, as expressed by stakeholders like Jose Bautista, owner of Las Vegas Lights. While the risk of relegation could threaten investments, the promise of meritocracy is compelling for fans and owners alike.
Back in March, the United Soccer League (USL) with its three tiers, and plans to add a fourth at the top of that pyramid, announced plans to institute pro-rel in either 2027 or 2028.
That's why the USL's announcement was lauded by fans and owners alike. 'It's going to bring in better players, better staff and just a better show for our fans,' said former MLB All-Star Jose Bautista.
