Why the Blue Jays should feel optimistic about a repeat performance from Springer
"George Springer produced the top highlight of the 2025 postseason and had a much better regular season than anyone could have expected. It didn't start that way though as Springer seemed ticketed for another miserable year after a 2024 campaign in which he slashed .220 with 19 home runs, 56 RBIs, and a career low OPS+ of 91."
"Springer posted a 4.8 bWAR in 140 games, slashing .309/.399/.560 along with 32 home runs, 84 RBIs and a career-high 161 OPS+. His move from the outfield to designated hitter paid off handsomely. So, what can be expected going forward? Fangraphs recently posted their Steamer projections and they project Springer will slash .260/.342/.455/ with 26 home runs in 609 plate appearances for a 123 wRC+. That is still not terrible production even though it's slightly lower than this past season."
"Springer saw his walk rate improve by two percentage points to 11.8%, well above league average. That led to an improvement in his chase rate from a year ago. His 20.4% chase rate sat firmly in the 94th percentile last season. Most importantly, the wily veteran didn't seem to be losing anything on his bat speed. That statistic typically shows the first signs of regression for a hitter entering his late"
The Toronto Blue Jays reached the brink of their ultimate goal while producing numerous highlights, anchored by George Springer’s resurgence. Springer transformed a poor 2024 (.220, 19 HR, 56 RBI, 91 OPS+) into a standout 2025 season with a 4.8 bWAR across 140 games, slashing .309/.399/.560 with 32 home runs and a 161 OPS+. The move to designated hitter boosted durability and output. Steamer projects a decline to roughly .260/.342/.455 with 26 home runs and a 123 wRC+. Plate discipline improved, evidenced by an 11.8% walk rate and a 20.4% chase rate in the 94th percentile, with no clear bat-speed loss.
