What's the shortest an MLB playoff series should be?
"It's October 3, 2025. Four teams fought at least somewhat hard to make the playoffs, running reasonable win totals to buy a shot to extend their season. Each of those teams then lost two games in the span of two or three days, and that's it, better fortune next year. It doesn't sit right with me. But then again, neither does losing three games in three to five days. Or losing four games in a week or less."
"Those things just seem misaligned with baseball. But I'm a noted "stop having playoffs that constitute short series" guy. (I'd be more than fine with the format if they gave teams free wins in a series to make the series' outcome aligned more to regular season outcomes, but no one's gonna do that.) So, I'll throw the question to you: is three games too short for an MLB postseason series? Five games? Something else?"
Four teams earned postseason berths after solid regular seasons but were eliminated after losing two games within two or three days. Losing multiple games in three to five days or four games in a week feels misaligned with baseball's long-season nature. Short postseason series amplify randomness and can overturn advantages earned over 162 games. One proposed remedy is longer series or granting higher-seeded teams compensatory wins to better align playoff outcomes with regular-season performance. Any format change must balance competitive legitimacy against scheduling, pitching logistics, and fan and broadcaster considerations.
