Pickler spent two seasons on the Minnesota Twins coaching staff before joining Cincinnati. He also worked in scouting with the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres while Josh Byrnes was general manager of those clubs. Byrnes was hired as Colorado's general manager under baseball operations president Paul DePodesta. Pickler played eight minor-league seasons as an infielder, including one season in the Rockies system, finishing his playing career at Triple-A in 2005.
