"The Pirates and right-hander José Urquidy are in agreement on a contract, reports Will Sammon of The Athletic. He'll earn $1.5MM on a one-year deal, Jon Heyman of the New York Post adds. Urquidy, an Octagon client, can boost that salary further via incentives. Pittsburgh generated headlines yesterday when they jumped in as a late entrant in the Framber Valdez bidding before he ultimately went to the Tigers last night."
"They'll still add a former Astros hurler to reunite with new pitching coach Bill Murphy, though on a much smaller scale. Murphy coached Urquidy with Houston from 2021-24. More to come."
José Urquidy will join the Pittsburgh Pirates on a one-year contract worth $1.5 million, with additional incentives available to increase the total compensation. Urquidy is represented by Octagon. The Pirates pursued Framber Valdez as a late entrant in bidding before Valdez signed with the Tigers, then shifted focus to signing Urquidy. The addition reunites Urquidy with new Pirates pitching coach Bill Murphy, who coached him with the Astros from 2021–24. The deal represents a lower-cost way to add a former Astros hurler to the staff while providing depth and familiarity with Murphy's pitching program. More details may follow.
