Mets' Bo Bichette already looks like a natural at 3rd base, Carlos Mendoza says amNewYork
"He's an athlete. We're looking at a guy that has played shortstop his whole career, Mendoza told The Show podcast. Watching him moving around third, taking grounders, creating angles, and just the throws to first, I was telling him, It looks like you've played here before."
"At shortstop, you need to make some long throws across the diamond. Third base as well, Bichette said after his introductory press conference last week. There is different positioning, different plays you have to deal with at third base that I'm going to have to get used to and learn, but I think it's all attainable."
Bo Bichette is shifting from shortstop to third base and has begun taking reps in Florida ahead of spring training. The 27-year-old previously played second base during the World Series after returning from a knee injury and had played shortstop for most of his career, with third base last seen in travel-ball high school. The Mets' infield construction includes Francisco Lindor at shortstop and Marcus Semien at second, prompting the position change. Bichette's range and declining shortstop defense, compounded by the knee issue, motivated the move. Bichette accepted the transition to join a contender and believes the positional adjustments are attainable.
