Mattingly leaves Jays; Schneider to return in '26
""He's had a significant (impact) and I feel like it will be lasting," Atkins said."
""It's something that we have to deal with in the game. We have to figure out a way to continue to improve even when we have a significant loss.""
""We have picked up the option, that was picked up previously," Atkins said."
""He and I are talking about the potential of that being longer. Schneids has been unbelievable. He is a clear leader in this organization. Really, really good at his job and very proud to be working with him.""
Don Mattingly is leaving his role as bench coach of the Toronto Blue Jays to spend more time with his family after helping the club reach the World Series. He joined Toronto after the 2022 season, served as offensive coordinator before 2024, and returned to bench coach at the end of 2024. General manager Ross Atkins said Mattingly's impact will be lasting and that the organization must adapt. The club exercised John Schneider's 2026 option after a season that produced a 20-win improvement; Schneider became interim manager in July 2022. Toronto made a $22,025,000 qualifying offer to two-time All-Star and AL hits leader Bo Bichette, who is expected to reject it, and Atkins said the team will pursue him in free agency while not anticipating significant coaching-staff changes.
