Longtime peanut vendor celebrates 50 seasons at Phillies ballparks
"PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania -- Peanut vendor Cheryl Spielvogel's voice has become synonymous with Phillies games over the past half-century. Still, in her 50th season, she has no plans to stop. It started in 1976 when she returned home from college and frequently attended Phillies games with friends at Veterans Stadium. She thought it might be a good idea to get a job there. And so, she started selling the only product she's ever sold: Peanuts."
"Spielvogel recalls they were only 40 cents a piece, and most customers would buy two packs at a time. She quickly learned from fellow vendors that she had to use her voice to get people's attention. That voice would echo throughout generations of Phillies fans who attended games for the next 50 seasons. Spielvogel, who is from Wayne, Pennsylvania, prefers to drive in early to avoid stress on I-76. Then, she watches batting practice and reads her books in section 112."
"While Spielvogel says each moment in the ballpark is her favorite, she has a sweet spot for the 1980 World Series and vending at All-Star Games. Some of her favorite players are Dick Allen, Chase Utley, and Alec Bohm. But it doesn't matter to her whether they win or lose. She simply loves baseball. Watch the video above to see Cheryl Spielvogel in action."
