"Martinez was traded to the Blue Jays in 1981, thinking it was going to be the end of his playing career. The veteran catcher got a second wind and wound up playing in 454 games over the next six years with the Blue Jays, producing a 3.5 bWAR with 35 home runs. One of his most memorable moments came on July 9, 1985 when he broke his leg and severely dislocated his ankle"
"Bradley was out on the play and with Martinez hurt, he still tried to throw out Gorman Thomas who was running to third. The ball sailed into left field towards George Bell. Thomas then advanced towards home and so Bell threw the ball to the plate and Martinez somehow managed to grab a hold of the ball and while he was sprawled out on the ground, tagged Thomas before he crossed the plate, ending up in one of the wildest double plays in franchise history."
Buck Martinez joined the Toronto Blue Jays as a player in 1981 and revitalized his career, appearing in 454 games over six seasons with a 3.5 bWAR and 35 home runs. On July 9, 1985 he suffered a broken leg and severe ankle dislocation in a plate collision yet completed a remarkable double play. After retiring as a player in 1986, he became a Blue Jays color analyst from 1987 to 2001, managed the team in 2001–2002 (going 100–115) and was dismissed 53 games into 2002. He broadcast for the Orioles (2003–2009) and returned to Blue Jays broadcasts in 2010 as a play-by-play announcer.
