Former Blue Jays coach and Yankees legend, joins the Phillies bench staff
"The Phillies have hired Don Mattingly as bench coach on the major league coaching staff.Welcome to Philly, Don! pic.twitter.com/tKno3xO9F4- Philadelphia Phillies (@Phillies) January 5, 2026"
"I had a pretty good feeling that this was going to be my last year in Toronto"
"Had a great time there, the organization has been tremendous. The fans there are tremendous. It's been a great run. But, before the year started, I felt like this was kind of the end with Toronto. Really nothing more than that,"
Don Mattingly joined the Philadelphia Phillies as bench coach after three seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. The hiring reunites him with manager Rob Thomson from their New York Yankees minor-league days. A key reason for the move was proximity to his son, Preston, who was hired as the Phillies' general manager in November 2024. Mattingly departed Toronto after the Blue Jays lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the 2025 World Series, which would have been his first World Series title. Mattingly spent his entire playing career with the Yankees from 1982 to 1995 and will enter his 40th MLB season in 2026.
