Former Blue Jay Derek Law signs minor league deal with Diamondbacks
"It's not the first time Law was a part of an organization in the National League West, as he was drafted in the ninth round of the 2011 draft by the San Francisco Giants. In 2016, he made his debut for the Giants, posting a 2.13 ERA and 2.53 FIP in 55 innings. He couldn't find that same success in either 2017 or 2018, and early into the 2019 season, Law was traded."
"On April 2nd, 2019, the rebuilding Jays sent fan-favourite Kevin Pillar to the Giants in exchange for Law, Alen Hanson, and Juan De Paula. The latter never pitched in the big leagues, while Hanson had a cup of tea after the trade. Law, on the other hand, authored a 4.90 ERA and 4.85 FIP in 60.2 innings pitched, picking up five saves and eight holds."
"It was with the Reds where Law had his first good season since his rookie year, posting a 3.60 ERA and 4.62 FIP in 55 innings pitched, appearing in a total of 54 games. Law continued that success in 2024, finishing the season with a 2.60 ERA and 3.32 FIP in 90 innings pitched. Unfortunately, Law missed the entirety of the 2025 season due to a flexor tendon surgery, hence the minor league deal."
Derek Law signed a minor-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks and will join their Triple-A Reno Aces. Law debuted in MLB in 2016 with the San Francisco Giants, posting a 2.13 ERA and 2.53 FIP in 55 innings. Law's performance declined in 2017 and 2018, and he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in April 2019 for Kevin Pillar. With Toronto in 2019 he posted a 4.90 ERA and 4.85 FIP across 60.2 innings, recording five saves and eight holds. Law was non-tendered after 2019, missed 2020, and made brief appearances for Minnesota, Detroit and Cincinnati before strong 2023–24 seasons; he missed 2025 due to flexor tendon surgery.
