First Base Up For Grabs In Final Stretch Of Chicago White Sox Season
Briefly

The White Sox have used ten different players at first base during the 2025 season, tied for the most of any position. Opening Day starter Andrew Vaughn struggled (.189 average, .531 OPS) and was traded in June to the Milwaukee Brewers for Aaron Civale. Several players who appeared at first are no longer with the organization, including Vaughn, Noda, Maton, Dalbec, Slater and Thaiss. Connor Elko is in Triple-A with a .303/.369/.603 slash line while posting a .145/.209/.355 line in 67 major-league plate appearances. Miguel Vargas, Lenyn Sosa and Ryan Mead are the primary remaining options, and manager Will Venable plans to continue evaluating multiple players down the stretch. Versatility among those candidates complicates the final decision.
The White Sox have rotated first basemen throughout the 2025 season, and with about five weeks left no one has emerged as the surefire choice for the future. Perhaps the best case scenario would have been Opening Day starter Andrew Vaughn living up to expectations as the No. 3 overall pick in 2019, but he hit .189 with a .531 OPS and was traded in June to the Milwaukee Brewers for starting pitcher Aaron Civale.
White Sox manager Will Venable plans on giving several players a chance to prove themselves down the stretch. "We're not, obviously, committing to anyone over there at first base," Venable said Saturday. "By the end of the season, you're going to see Vargas over there, Mead, Sosa. Obviously, we still have Elko in Triple-A. We have a number of guys that are going to be over there, and we'll see what they can do."
