"Honestly, it was my only option to play; a lot of my interest was as a pitcher coming out of high school,"
"Princeton was going to let me keep the bat in my hands. I figured I could get on the field as a freshman. It just kind of all came together right before my senior year."
Matt Scannell is a 24-year-old outfielder from San Antonio who signed with the Toronto Blue Jays in July. He attended Princeton, which recruited him primarily for his hitting and allowed him to continue batting despite prior pitching interest. The COVID-19 pandemic cancelled his freshman season and curtailed his high school senior year, prompting summer play with the Madison Mallards and other collegiate summer stints. Scannell produced three seasons with an OPS over .800, including a .903 OPS in 2023 with 10 home runs, 10 doubles and 32 RBIs. His collegiate tenure coincided with Princeton improving from seven combined wins to 42 over two seasons. He played alongside Caden Shapiro.
