Eloy Jimenez reached an agreement on a new minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. He previously played for Toronto earlier in the season, was designated for assignment, cleared waivers, and elected free agency in early May. No other club placed him directly on a major league roster, so he will return to the Jays and try to earn another opportunity. In a dozen games with Toronto, he hit .290 with a .343 on-base percentage over 35 plate appearances, but he produced no extra-base hits and slugged .290. His early career showed promise with 31 rookie home runs, but injuries limited him and his power declined. Since 2023, he has posted a below-average .259/.307/.393 line. He also has struggled defensively, with poor sprint speed and negative defensive metrics.
"Dating back to 2023, Jimenez has taken 873 major league plate appearances and posted a below-average .259/.307/.393 line. If he were able to provide value with his glove and/or on the basepaths, that could still be a passable line, but Jimenez is a poor defensive outfielder whose sprint speed sat in the 21st percentile of big leaguers earlier this season, per Statcast. Defensive Runs Saved has dinged him for -14 runs in his career, and Statcast has graded him at -19 Outs Above Average."
