The Angels went 63-99 in 2024, fell to 72-90 in 2025, and extended their streak to ten consecutive losing seasons. Suzuki was born in Wailuku, Hawaii, hit the College World Series–clinching single for Cal State Fullerton in 2004, and was a second-round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics in 2004. The team considered Albert Pujols and Torii Hunter for the managerial role.
