"What were the expectations? Ritchie looked good in five games after signing, including three with Augusta. The plan for him to open the 2023 season was to start back in Augusta and go from there in his age-19 season. Things got off to a great start and he appeared close to really breaking out with 25 strikeouts in 13.1 innings over four starts, but he blew out his arm and required Tommy John surgery."
"One word to describe Ritchie's 2025 season was excellence. He dominated in seven starts for Rome, pitching to a 1.30 ERA and 0.79 WHIP with 38 strikeouts in 41.2 innings. That earned a promotion to Columbus, where in eight starts he pitched to a 3.49 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 38.2 innings. He was then moved to Gwinnett, where he made 11 starts with a 3.02 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 61 strikeouts in 59.2 innings."
JR Ritchie was a 35th overall 2022 first-round pick by the Atlanta Braves, taken after they acquired the pick in a trade. He entered pro ball as a hard-throwing, high-upside prep righty and began 2023 projected to start at Augusta. He posted 25 strikeouts in 13.1 innings before suffering an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery, sidelining him until mid-June 2024. After returning he posted a 2.90 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 56 strikeouts in 49.2 innings across the FCL, Augusta, and Rome. In 2025 he dominated at three levels, earning promotions to Columbus and Gwinnett while maintaining strong strikeout rates and sub-3.50 ERAs.
