"We didn't do anything the rest of the week and took the next week off. We rested our bodies and emotionally refreshed. It definitely helped us offensively connect better. We're playing a better game these last four games. When you lose you're disappointed and sometimes going into state, people don't care. It's such a great opportunity for us."
"Most importantly, Patriot players decided they wanted to win in the state playoffs. Phillips is averaging 22.8 points. McKay is averaging 12.6 points and 10.5 rebounds. Phillips has twice played at Golden 1 Center when he was a member of the Alijah Arenas-led Chatsworth team."
Birmingham High's Patriots basketball team earned a spot in the Division III state championship game against Antioch Cornerstone Christian after an unexpected playoff run. Despite losing to Fairfax in the first round of City Section playoffs on February 11, the team took three weeks off before competing in state playoffs. The rest period allowed players to physically recover and emotionally refresh, which contributed to improved offensive performance. Led by Tekeio Phillips averaging 22.8 points and X'Zavion McKay averaging 12.6 points and 10.5 rebounds, Birmingham won four consecutive state playoff games. The championship game is scheduled for Friday at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
