Deadspin | No. 5 St. John's out to prove seeding too low vs. No. 12 Northern Iowa
"We battled through adversity and learned a lot about ourselves through those matchups, and we're truly excited. ... (This) is entirely different, and the guys are ready for it. Nobody wants to lose in the first round. Ejiofor said he hopes a challenging non-conference schedule will better prepare the Red Storm this year for tournament success."
"Since a 77-71 loss to Providence on Jan. 3, the Red Storm have gone 19-1, with the defeat being a particularly rough 72-40 loss against then-No. 6-ranked UConn on Feb. 25. However, the St. John's run also includes two wins over the Huskies, including an impressive 72-52 victory in the Big East conference title game Saturday."
St. John's Red Storm won both the Big East regular-season title and conference tournament but received only a No. 5 seed for their NCAA Tournament opener against Northern Iowa in San Diego. Star forward Zuby Ejiofor, the Big East Player of the Year, leads the team with 16.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. After a loss to Providence on January 3, St. John's compiled a 19-1 record, including two victories over then-No. 6 UConn, with a dominant 72-52 win in the Big East championship game. Ejiofor contributed 18 points and nine rebounds in that title game, while teammates Bryce Hopkins and Oziyah Sellers added 18 and 14 points respectively. The team aims to advance beyond the second round after last season's early exit.
