Jaslene Massey, a junior shot put athlete from California, is rapidly gaining recognition in track and field. She recently won the Orange County championships with a historic throw of 50 feet, 7 inches, becoming the first high school girl in California to surpass the 50-foot mark since 2016. Known for her infectious smile and bubbly personality, she has also excelled in volleyball and was previously a figure skater. Her coaches emphasize her natural strength and height, attributing her success to significant adjustments in her training regimen, particularly in weightlifting, which have enhanced her explosive performance in track and field.
"It's definitely come as a shock to me. Last year I thought I was going to go 47 feet. Now I want to keep working."
"I saw her throw a shotput like it was a three-pointer," he said. "She's so strong and explosive."
"Being long really helps," said Sherman Oaks Notre Dame throwing coach Nick Garcia.
"The way I weightlifted completely changed. I was doing it on my own freshman and sophomore year..."
