Burke died Friday at age 87, with both his family and the marathon organizing group confirming his passing. Born May 13, 1939, in Ohio, he served in the U.S. Air Force before working as a communications manager and aide to California Assembly and Los Angeles City Council members. He served as a tennis commissioner during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and was later chair of the South Coast Air Quality Management District. He was married for decades to former L.A. County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke and is survived by her and their children, Christine and Autumn.
