Hollywood Burbank Airport operates within very tight airspace parameters inside heavily congested Los Angeles airspace. The main runway at Burbank is unusually short and lies close to Van Nuys Airport, producing overlapping flight patterns and little room for error. Van Nuys hosts many flying schools and presents a wide variation of pilot experience and aircraft capability, increasing complexity. Since 2018, at least 12 near-collision or TCAS-alert incidents have been reported involving Burbank approaches. Pilots describe the environment as demanding and capable of producing unstable approaches, and safety reporting systems capture and analyze these events.
