In Boyle Heights, a celebration known as El Quince transformed the quinceanera tradition into an art form, curated by artist Anita Herrera. The event illuminated the cultural significance of these coming-of-age ceremonies, emphasizing the spirit of community and belonging. While quinceaneras have evolved to encompass both simple and extravagant styles, the essence of recognizing a girl’s transition into adulthood remains vital. The evening raised funds for Los Angeles Nomadic Division, fostering support for local artists and marking a unique intersection of art and tradition.
I wanted to push this conversation and push the boundary of this idea that a party is actually art. It is actually one of the highest forms of contemporary art.
Quinceaneras have always taken many forms, but in recent years, some have made a turn for the extravagant. The heart of the quinceanera and the feeling of belonging and of being seen and celebrated by the community endures.
