Waymo self-driving taxi takes passenger through active police scene in downtown LA, video shows
"Safety is our highest priority at Waymo, both for people who choose to ride with us and with whom we share the streets. When we encounter unusual events like this one, we learn from them as we continue improving road safety and operating in dynamic cities."
"no more than 15 seconds."
A Waymo driverless taxi drove through an area of downtown Los Angeles where officers were conducting a high-risk felony arrest after a stolen vehicle pursuit at about 3:40 a.m. The vehicle entered the intersection of First Street and Broadway and turned into an area that was not blocked off while other vehicles were also traveling. Waymo said the vehicle was in the vicinity for no more than 15 seconds and emphasized that safety is the company’s highest priority, adding that unusual events are used to improve road safety and operations. The LAPD said the incident did not impact tactics and maintains a 24/7 hotline to coordinate with Waymo. Waymo began operating driverless taxis in Los Angeles early last year and opened service to everyone in November 2024.
