Alston began his managerial career with the Nashua Dodgers in 1946, managing integrated baseball pioneers Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe. He managed Triple-A affiliates before being hired as Brooklyn Dodgers manager in 1954. During his 23-year tenure through 1976, Alston guided the franchise to four World Series titles in 1955, 1959, 1963, and 1965. He earned six National League Manager of the Year awards and managed nine All-Star games, winning seven. Alston compiled a 2,040-1,613 career record. A heart attack prevented his Hall of Fame ceremony attendance, and he died in October 1984 at age 72.
