They transformed a historic bar into a fantasy forest for all of L.A.'s witches
"I wanted this to feel lived in. I wanted this to be a visual feast because I think maximalism is just so interesting. That may be the ADHD talking, but I knew I wanted a lot. The space features hand-constructed tree trunks, hidden doors, mermaid sculptures, and bird sounds throughout, creating an immersive fairy-tale forest atmosphere."
"Everybody tries to shame you. Like, 'You can't buy that coffee. Save your money.' No, let them have the coffee they really love. Let them get that annual pass to Disneyland. Let them have a weekly night at the movies, even if they go alone. The world is so weird right now. What we can do is find joy in tiny things."
The Witch's Cottage is a newly opened two-story cafe, restaurant, and bar in North Hollywood that transforms a former Federal Bar into an immersive, whimsical space. Founders Danielle Ozymandias and Celina Lee Surniak, both identifying as witches, spent a decade developing this vision. The space features hand-constructed tree trunks, hidden doors with tiny witches, mermaid sculptures, wolf engravings, and bird sounds throughout. Every corner references fables and fantasy elements. The maximalist design creates a lived-in visual feast. Beyond the aesthetic, the venue serves quality food like chicken etouffee and signature drinks such as the Hex Breaker, a rum-heavy tiki cocktail. The founders intentionally designed the space to bring joy to adults, encouraging them to embrace small pleasures and find happiness in whimsical experiences.
