King Taco began as a 1975 walk-up counter in Cypress Park and played a central role in popularizing soft corn-tortilla tacos in Los Angeles. Founders Raúl and Lupe Martinez launched what is credited as the first taco truck in 1974 and expanded into a fleet of food trucks and nearly two dozen restaurants. The operation introduced grilled meats, cilantro, onions and fresh salsas to many Angelenos accustomed to hard-shell tacos. The city's Cultural Heritage Commission voted unanimously to recommend historic-cultural designation, and the designation will next proceed to Planning and Land Use Management and City Council review by late April.
