Copper wire thieves damaged a key communications tower in Elysian Park, rendering portable radios and emergency buttons unusable for Los Angeles Department of Transportation officers and forcing their removal from the field. Two suspected thieves were apprehended after attempting to strip the tower. The City's Information Technology Agency is exploring repair options and ITA radio staff are working with LADOT to identify remaining radio functions to minimize impacts. The Los Angeles Police Department's radio system was not affected, and contracted tow operators were notified. Copper wire thefts have previously caused bridge darkening, phone and internet outages and other service disruptions.
