Katherine Fleming, who transitioned from being provost at NYU to CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, now has firsthand experience with wildfires. Under her management, the Getty Villa faced threats from the Palisades fire, leading to proactive firefighting and protective measures. Fortunately, while the grounds were affected, the villa structures remained intact. Fleming highlights that effective wildfire prevention relies on long-term fuel reduction strategies, such as maintaining distances from flammable vegetation and selecting appropriate plant species to enhance fire resistance.
The single most important thing in my view was fuel reduction measures that were taken consistently over the course of years, especially due to the drought.
We're very fortunate in that the damage to the Getty Villa is exclusively found outside of the villa itself, with the grounds most visibly affected.
