On the Trail of the Los Angeles Fires
Briefly

The article provides insight into the work of graphics journalists at The New York Times, particularly during the crisis of the Palisades fire in Los Angeles County. As the fire escalated, affecting over 10,000 homes and resulting in multiple fatalities, journalists Blacki Migliozzi and a colleague were dispatched to gather on-site information. Their focus involved studying the initial report locations, eyewitness accounts, and assessing the aftermath of the fires through visual documentation, while also navigating challenges posed by active investigation scenes.
Our task as graphics journalists is a little different than that of other reporters and photographers. We make maps, charts and other data visualizations.
Once in a while, we get the chance to go out in the field to do on-the-ground reporting... We studied eyewitness photos and videos.
It was near sunset, and smoke was still emanating from the mountains. Street after street was lined with houses burned to the ground.
A police officer approached Blacki and I and told us we were in an active scene of investigation and needed to turn around.
