Erik and Lyle Menendez's parole hearing has been delayed to August after California Governor Gavin Newsom withdrew a clemency request as the brothers received a new 50-year sentence. Initially sentenced to life without parole for killing their parents in 1989, the recent ruling allows them to be eligible for parole under California law. Their cousin, Anamaria Baralt, expressed that the delay provides the brothers with more time to prepare for their parole suitability hearing, as most inmates prepare for a year.
"This is not a bad thing," Baralt said. "Most people prepare for parole for like a year ... the more time that they can have to prepare, the better."
Scott Wyckoff mentioned the clemency request's withdrawal was due to the recent resentencing which allows the Menendez brothers to be eligible for parole.
