Meet South L.A.'s Next Wave of Young Chefs
"Since the Kitchen to Capital program launched in October 2025, different cohorts - many of their students, whose ages range from 18 to 24, grew up in South LA - have come in every six weeks to SoLa's headquarters. At the Beehive, the organization's 5-acre campus and venue space in Florence, students spend time learning culinary skills and get hands-on training at the complex's 60th Street Cafe."
"The student-run cafe provides affordable and healthy meals for the community in an area with a median household income of $54,000 and with 27.1 percent of its residents living below the poverty line. There are fewer grocery stores per capita in South Los Angeles than in other parts of the city, according to a report from the Guardian."
SoLa Foundation operates Kitchen to Capital, a no-cost culinary training program serving young adults aged 18-24 from South Los Angeles. Students train at the Beehive, a 5-acre campus featuring 60th Street Cafe, learning from professional chefs including Keith Corbin and Christian Ferrell. The program combines hands-on culinary instruction with community service, as the student-run cafe provides affordable, healthy meals to residents in an economically disadvantaged area with a median household income of $54,000 and 27.1% poverty rate. South Los Angeles faces significant food access challenges, including fewer grocery stores per capita and higher food insecurity rates compared to other city areas.
